Petty Officer 3rd Class
Coast Guard Public Affairs Detachment
Tampa Bay, Florida
"I was extremely proud to call myself a 'Star' in the 13 years I attended that school."
Tara took classes at El Camino College before joining the United States Coast Guard. After tours in Sitka, Alaska; Seattle, Washington; and now currently in Tampa, Florida; Tara passed her seven year mark in November of 2010 and plans to make the Coast Guard her career as a public affairs specialist.
She recently returned from a humanitarian trip with the Coast Guard Cutter Oak down to Port-au-Prince, Haiti where she documented the Coast Guard's mission through photography, videography and journalism. You can view her story here:
Tara is working towards obtaining her BA in Communications through the American Military University.
In her free time, Tara has volunteered with several organizations such as the Sitka Fire Department (firefighter), Sitka Raptor Center (a rehabilitation center for birds of prey) and the Seattle Chapter of the Surfrider Organization (a non-profit grassroots organization working towards keeping the coastlines/beaches clean). The Coast Guard honored her with the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service award for her efforts.
"The Coast Guard was one of the best things that ever happened to me," said Tara. "It gave the positive direction I was looking for in life and has allowed me to befriend several wonderful people and travel to many different places."
When she isn't working or volunteering, Tara enjoys following sports, especially the USC Trojans, and learning to play ice hockey.
